The story I chose to read this week was the children's literature
book, “More Jataka Tales” by Ellen C. Babbitt. I chose Beauty and Brownie
because it was a simple story yet very entertaining to read.
The story begins by introducing the two characters who are
both deer. Their names are Beauty and Brownie. Beauty and Brownie lived with
their parents in a community of deer that all collectively lived in the forest.
During corn season, the deer who live in the forest become endangered. The
father warned the deer community of the danger and advised them to take their
own herd of Deer and go far away from the field. The reason that the deer
become to be in danger is that whenever the corn begins to ripen, the men
set traps and trap the deer while they try to eat the corn. The deer, Brownie,
asked his father if they should all go away together, and the father said that
the mother and him, as well as some of the older deer, stay in the forest during
this time. He advised that brownie lead a heard up into the hills so they would
have enough food while the crops were being cut. He said that the herd needs to
travel at night because if not the hunters will kill them, and they must not go
near the villages where the hunters live. Brownie and his sibling Beauty set
out with their hers and Beauty followed all of the instructions given by his
brother. Beauty did not lose a single deer because of his cautious ways.
Brownie did not listen to his father so he began to lead his heard in the
morning and also led them right through the village. The hunters killed most of
Brownie’s herd. The crops were finally cropped and the deer began to head back
and Beauty listened once again and arrived back with all of his deer. Brownie
did not listen and repeated his mistakes and even more of his herd was killed.
I think I could make my own story into this by using another
setting perhaps underwater with fishermen baiting the water. I could also do a similar
story of animals in the desert.
