Vyssa was born by Indra’s semen falling into a river and a female fish swallowing it. 10 months later two children were born. The female gave birth to another child named Vyasa. King Shantanu was walking throughout the Ganges when suddenly a maiden appeared and they wed together. The goddess then gave birth to a son, and she sent him to the Ganges. The King did not want to cause a scene about what the goddess had just done so he kept quiet. The goddess had 7 more children destroying each of them. When the eighth kid was born and the King could not handle each of their kids being destroyed so his pent-up anger caused him to give a stern speech to the goddess and the vow from their marriage was broken. The goddess then took the last child with her and vanished. The goddess returned to King Shantanu with a noble son who has the power of Vasus. She then separated from Shantanu and was to never be seen again. The King spent all of his time and attention towards his new son who he named Devavrata.

King Shantanu was all alone due to his first wife leaving him, therefore he began to move on to Satyavati. The fisher story of the girl who was found inside of the fish is retold. It is mentioned that the girl found grew up to be a lovely girl with a fishy odor. One day a boat with the Brahmin Parashara approached her and saw how beautiful she was. He had decided that he wanted her to be the mother of his sons and soon she became just that. The son grew before her eyes and was named Vyasa. Vyasa went into the depths of the forest and told his mother that if she ever needed anything to just think of him and he would appear to help her. Then, Satyavati became a virgin again and King Shantanu fell in love with her and wanted her to be his bride.
