Introduction

Gulf Shores, Alabama. This was the place my friends and I visited this summer. In this picture, the pier is close to where we would play sand volleyball every night.

Hello, my name is Adrienne Gibson. I am a psychology, pre-dental major. I always knew growing up I would want to grow up with a career that could help people. I think the coolest thing about my major is that you get to develop relationships with your clients and make a difference in one’s life. I chose the psychology major because with each psychology class I took freshman year, I began to love the subject and it quickly became one of my favorite classes to go to. Two of my favorite psychology classes I have taken are eating disorders and personality. Both are very different but very interesting to me. Some of my biggest accomplishments last semester were finally developing a solid way to study for my harder science classes and seeing it pay off with good grades in each of them.

Apart from school, my favorite activities include listening to music, watching new TV series and movies, and hanging out with my friends. My favorite genre of music is alternative, my favorite kind of movies are mysteries, and my favorite type of TV shows to watch are reality shows. Over the summer I took a trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama with my friends. It was a nice break from the summer classes I had taken. While there, we performed some of my favorite hobbies-trying new foods and playing sand volleyball. I love trying out different kinds of food from different places, however, I am still trying to like seafood items. When we got back from our trip, my friends and I continued to play sand volleyball, and although we were not the best, it was still a fun way to hang out with them. Going to the beach is one of my favorite places to visit. Each summer, my family and I visit Pensacola, Florida, and it has always been one of my favorite memories.

  1. Hi Adrienne. Since the first thing you mentioned as a favorite activity was listening to music and because I'm a big time music nerd, I've got to ask -- who are your five favorite musical artists?

Are you doing psychology and pre-dental as a double major? That sounds like a really good idea. I can imagine the skills you'll learn in psychology will come in handy while working with patients (especially ones that are not fans of dentists). Good luck!

  2. Adrienne, it is great to have you in my class, it is great to know that you are a psychology Pre dental major I was once Pre med before I switched to Pre Law and even though I am a political science major psychology and poli sci both come under social sciences and involves developing relations with people around you. I am sure you make a great impact in lives of many people and I cant wait to read your posts.

  3. That combination of psychology and pre-dental sounds great, Adrienne! I am one of those nervous dental patients, and it took a long time to find a dentist and a hygienist that I felt really comfortable with and who knew just what to say and do to make me feel confident and positive about dental health. It was their psychology insights for sure, not just their dental skills! And personality psychology is one of my favorite psychology domains too; maybe you could use that as a storytelling tool, thinking about the personalities of the characters and using the author's note to your stories to educate people about just how personality psychology works and what it can tell us about characters in stories too. I've seen some websites that try to give MBTI classifications for fictional characters for example... it's weird, but fun! I just Googled it; this is definitely a thing, ha ha... maybe you could do MBTI for the epic characters; that would be fascinating! MBTI fictional characters :-)

  4. Hi Adrienne! I have to say that mysteries and horror movies are my absolute favorite! Do you have a personal favorite? Have you seen the super old Clue movie? It's honestly one of my favorite mystery movies and still pretty funny. Aside from that, do you live near a beach? My family normally takes a trip to Florida and the ocean is incredibly relaxing. I have a hard time eating seafood as well, I can never get the fishy taste to go away no matter the type. Recently I've started eating crab sushi which is a big step for me, although it's only edible with the yum-yum sauce.

  5. Hey Adrienne! That picture from Gulf Shores is absolutely beautiful. I'm sure your trip there was just amazing. My friends and I got to take a beach trip a few years back and I absolutely loved it. The beach is one of my favorite places to be so getting to go with my favorite people is always amazing. I think it's cool that you've chosen psychology as your degree with Pre-Dental. I think it's a neat way to combine what you love.

  6. Hi Adrienne!

I bet you could somehow merge your interests in psychology and mysteries to serve you in your creative writing in this class. Given what we have read so far of the Ramayana, I wonder if you could psycho-analyze a character and really build a captivating, dramatic story around their personality? I think this would really be a great way to showcase your skills in a creative way! Professor Gibbs does allow a lot of experimentation. As for your travel, I have to agree that some of the most sacred memories are sharing experiences in new places with friends and family! As for seafood, I have to agree some kinds are less appealing- for me, I stay away from squid/octopus and scallops! I recommend cooked sushi- bite sized fried fish with veggies and rice with every bite assures no fish taste in my experience!

  7. Hi Adrienne! I think your interests in psychology and helping people are really cool and admirable. I hope you're able either to find some outlet for creativity in writing or to find a character you relate to in the readings. Also, I'm really glad to hear that your hard work in studying for science classes paid off! Since I'm an English major, I mostly write papers instead of studying for exams, so your ability to study hard and do well is even more incredible to me! Your majors sound really tough -- I know I couldn't do them as well as you are.

  8. Hi Adrienne! What a beautiful picture, and an interesting major combination. That sounds so much fun though. I've loved my psychology classes as well, but I don't think I could handle to go further into it. It takes a strong mind. I like mysteries but haven't watched many. Do you have a favorite? I am not big on sea-food either. Everyone thinks i'm crazy, I just don't understand it. I've never been to Florida but I bet its awesome!

  9. Hello Adrienne! Interesting mixing pre-dental and psychology. I have taken a lot of psychology classes and find that they do help one to see in a different light. Notice things about people that they had not noticed before! What kind of television shows do you like to watch? What do you think is the hardest science class you have taken?

  10. Hey Adrienne, I am not a psychology major but I love that subject! I'm actually planning on minoring in psychology. I took AP psychology in high school and found myself to love that subject ever since. I plan on taking eating disorders during the winter intercession because it sounds like a very interesting class! I took introduction to personality my freshman year and absolutely loved it!

  13. Hey Adrienne! I think it is awesome that you a chose a major that you wanted to do so that you could help people. I wish I had been able to take psychology classes while in college, but never found the time. I also like alternative music and enjoy playing volleyball, though I haven't played for close to three years now.

  14. Hi Adrienne!

Your combination of majors is interesting. I wouldn’t have thought to pair psychology with dentistry. However, I think it’s great that you really enjoy the classes you are taking. I find it’s easier to do well in the class if you actually like going.

I will agree with you that going to the beach is the best. I try and travel as much as possible with my family. Most of the places we go are on a beach somewhere. I have never been to Gulf Shores, but from your picture, it looks beautiful.

What is your favorite kind of food that you have tried so far?

Hope you have a great rest of the semester!

  15. Hi!
I think psychology is such a great degree that can help people entering every career field. I also am getting a degree in the health field because I want to help people. Seafood is not my favorite by any means. I've lived in Maryland, Washington and Hawaii with some of the best places to eat seafood and still don't like it very much. My favorites are probably sushi or calamari so far. I love the beach too and I miss living close to it! I've never been to Pensacola but my husband has and I hope to go someday.

  16. Hi Adrienne! I am a psychology major as well! It is such an interesting field and major. Psychology classes were always my favorite as well! Personality psych was such a good class. Did you have Dr. Cox-Fuendzalida? She is awesome. Good luck on your aspirations of becoming a dentist. I hope you have a great semester and I look forward to reading more of your stories!

  17. Hey Adrienne,

I find dentistry to be such a rewarding career; As a dentist, you can see the immediate changes in aesthetics and functionality after a patient's appointment. I think your major goes hand-in-hand with your career aspirations, because it is important to understand the psyches of your patient before any procedure. I look forward to reading your stories!

  18. Hi Adrienne! I am a psychology major as well. It seems that you enjoy the major as much as I do. It really gives you a chance to make a difference in people's lives which I really like as well. I wish you well in your pre-dental route. It is awesome that you like alternative music. I do not usually branch out but I do enjoy listening to new types of music. I hope you have a great rest of the semester.
